The name Mazda derives from Ahura Mazda, a god of the earliest civilizations in West Asia … “the god of wisdom, intelligence and harmony…”
Founded in 1910 as Toyo Cork Kogyo, they were originally a tool maker moving to car manufacture in 1927. They finally completed the move to the name Mazda in 1984. In the 1960s Mazda put a major effort into the development of the wankle rotary engine, which is notoriously thirsty, and can still be seen today in the RX-8. They are the only manufacturer still using the rotary engine.
1979 saw Ford take a 7% stake to sure up the Japanese companies finances and by 1997 Ford owned a controlling 33.9% stake. Apart from the RX-7 and RX-8 sports cars though Mazda has a jewel in its crown – the MX-5 roadster – which is a very good two seater open top car that remains true to its origin and handles very well and is a fun drive, with a host of loyal customers.
