Smart is a branch of Daimler making micro-cars. Smart is marketed as smart (all lower case) and has an emblem with a C, for compact and an > for forward thinking.
Founded by Nicolas Hayek CEO of Swatch watches in the 1980’s he believed the same strategies and personalisation that had made the watches popular would work in the much ignored small car sector. Initially he formed an agreement with Volkswagen but this was canned by Ferdinand Piech in 1993, an agreement to build these cars was made in 1994 with Daimler-Benz AG maker of Mercedes Benz cars.
Smart have evolved but remained true to the initial idea producing 2 seater compact cars (popular in cities and with those adverting their businesses on them) a 2 seat roadster and most recently a compact 4 door/4 seater compact car.
