Ssangyong means Two Dragons and comes from the formation of the company that started life as two separate entities, Ha Dong-hwan Motor Workshop established in 1954 and the Dongbang Motor Company formed in 1962. These two companies merged in 1963 to form Ha Dong-hwan Motor Company who built jeeps for the U.S. army as well as trucks and buses. Taken over in 1986 by Ssangyong Business Group they changed their name to Ssangyong Motors. Great news in 1991 when they became part of a strategic alliance with Mercedes Benz to build a SUV with slightly outdated Mercedes underpinnings. Step forward British designer Ken Greenley who penned the Musso and received awards for this vehicle in 1994 and 1996.
Daewoo bought a controlling interest in 1997 only to sell it again in 2000. Recording a loss of $75m in 2009 they entered into receivership but fortunately have been brought back from this “bankruptcy protection” by India’s Mahindra and Mahindra. So the “marmite” styling continues with good value SUVs like the Rexton, Kyron and Rodius. All using “yesterdays” Mercedes technology – well that’s a good thing.
Tuning for the SSangyong range is as you would expect – pretty comprehensive as we have vast experience with ECU remapping chipping and chip tuning for Mercedes, and therefore for the range of Ssangyongs. More Bhp, Torque is available as it better throttle response and a smoother torque curve and if you are looking for better fuel economy, well we can do that as well.
